Earth Day

Earth Day: The History of A Movement

The height of hippie and flower-child culture in the United States, 1970 brought the death of Jimi Hendrix, the last Beatles album, and Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water”. Protest was the order of the day, but saving the planet was not the cause. War raged in Vietnam, and students nationwide increasingly opposed it...Visit our Go Green Section to read more.

Green Machine: Sucking carbon dioxide out of the air

Power.jpg

Think of it as a chemical vacuum cleaner for sucking greenhouse gases out of the air.

Air capture, in which carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere, has been touted as a potentially promising way to tackle climate change. That's because unlike carbon capture from power plant flue gases, the technology has the potential to reduce existing CO2 levels, rather than simply slowing the rate of increase.

To demonstrate that the technology works, Christopher Jones at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta tested a CO2 absorbent based on amines - the chemicals predominantly used in power plant carbon capture trials - on gases with CO2 concentrations similar to those found in ambient air.

He found the material was able to repeatedly extract CO2 from the gas without being degraded, which will be vital if the technology is to be used economically on a wide-scale.

However, unlike the liquid amines typically used in power plant carbon capture, which consume large amounts of energy as they must be heated to very high temperatures to re-release their stored CO2, Jones' team has developed a new class of the material called hyperbranched aminosilica, in which the amine is held on a solid porous silica substrate.

Solid amines release the stored CO2 when heated to just 110 degrees Celsius - much lower than the temperatures required by the water-based liquid amine solutions - reducing the amount of energy required by 75 per cent.

This also means the energy needed could be supplied by widely available sources such as waste heat from industrial plants, says Peter Eisenberger of air capture company, based in New York. The energy could also be supplied by renewable sources such as solar power, he says. The captured CO2 could then be fed to algae, which absorb the gas to produce biofuel and biochar.

Jones is working with the company to test a pilot air capture plant in Menlo Park, California, which is absorbing 2 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere each day. A commercial plant could absorb 1 million tonnes of CO2 per day, says Eisenberger.

Musical genius

The demise of Bhimsen Joshi on January 24 in Pune marked the end of an era in Hindustani classical or, more accurately, Margiya music. He was 89.
As a singer, he was a true star whose popularity cut across a wide variety of listeners, from the rasikas, or connoisseurs, to the uninitiated who were enthralled by his marvellous voice. I remember being thrilled by hid robust and miraculously honey dripped rendering of the raaga Kalashree on All India Radio(AIR) over 40 years ago. It took me some time to realise it was a long playing record courtesy HMV(his master's voice), now Saregama, broadcast by the radio satation. It must not be forgatten that he had been an AIR Lucknow staff artiste in 1941-42, doing three 10-minute broadcasts every week as a bhajan singer. He then shared a room with the not-yet-famous shehnai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan.
It was not untill 1946 that the limelight shone on him.
In 2008, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in the country. It was a distinction that he was to share with Bismillah Khan, his former roommate, who was honoured six years later.
He had served his gods and loyal listeners through music, and to music he belonged.
May his soul rest in peace.

Emerging technology is not the answer to the world's social and economic problems!!!!!

Emerging technology is not the answer to the world's social and economic problems!!!!!
I've been reading news reports about how Technology is advancing so rapidly that by the year 2050, we're supposed to be able to download our entire consciousness into our laptop computers. That right, just plug in your brain, and apparently you can download your memories and all the data in your head.
Now, what's wrong with this? First of all, the brain does not store information in bits and bytes. The brain is not a digital storage system. The brain, and more importantly, the mind, is holographic in the way that it stores and retrieves information. And, by the way, the information that the brain stores isn't even really stored with perfectly accuracy anyway.
Peoples' perceptions are distorted; peoples' memories are distorted. They're fuzzy. They waver in and out. They can be created on the fly, so it's not like you have a databank in your head that's just sitting there waiting to be downloaded. All the memories and perceptions in your head are shifting around all the time. What you think you remember today may not have happened that way at all. In fact, very little of what you remember actually happened that way.
In other words, we don't see reality. We experience a very tiny interpretation of the world around us. The universe out there, and what's encoded in our head, is really just an experience; a holographic representation of various sensory inputs, emotions and experiences at that time. This it not just some data, and this is not like a zip file. You can't just download it into a computer or slap it onto a flash drive.

BBC cuts back World service

While the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and the United Kingdom government traded blows over who was to blame for the cuts outlined at the BBC World Service recently, the global impact of the biggest single change in the broadcaster's 79- year history was only just beginning to sink in .
The axing of the five foreign language services and wholesale retreat from shortwave radio - including the end of broadcasts to India, Russia and China - will lead to the loss of more than 30 million listeners, a sixth of the world Service's global audience of 180 million the BBC estimates. The five language services being shut down Portuguese for Africa, Caribbean English , Macedonian, Serbian and Albanian - have a combined audience of 3.4 million.
The changes mean that the World Service is likely to be overtaken by the Voice of America, established in 1942 and funded by the United States government, as the world's leading global news broadcaster.
The scaling back follows a 16 per cent cut in the world service's funding by the Foreign Office, with the BBC looking to make 46 million Euro of savings a year by 2014.
It's loss will be keenly felt.

PLANT A TREE TODAY......

The earth is warming up, and the best available evidence points to the increasing concentration of greenhouse gases as the leading cause.
Deforestation and climate change are intimately connected: Globally, deforestation releases nearly 2 billion tons of carbon dioxide per year, and is responsible for nearly 25 percent of man-made CO2 emissions. The destruction of the world's forests not only harms the communities that depend on them, but increasingly affects us all.
While the root causes of deforestation vary from region to region, there are some common solutions. Communities need seeds, training, and technical support in order to adapt long-standing cultural and agricultural traditions (such as gathering fuelwood in nearby forests and practicing slash-and-burn agriculture) to new realities. Starting nurseries and planting trees is part of this process.
It is not too late.We still have much in our hands. We have to realize our responsibilities before its too late. Do just a little work of planting tree this day, which in actual, is a great job.
Don't make it too late......
Help EARTH, Help Yourself now.......
PLANT atleast a TREE....!!!!
Make it GREEN & CLEAN.....

GREEN EARTH

Electoral Aspirations

The way the protests spread from village to city, region to region, from one country to another, and eventually became an overall Pan-Arab uprising bears all the hallmarks of the Information Age and certain kinds of postmodern politics.
All the historic forms of opposition and mobilization known to modern societies-political parties, trade unions, the independent press, liberal liberties of various sorts were successfully suppressed or atleast compromised by all the dictatorial regimes that historic forms of revolt, such as a nation wide proletarian uprising led by seasoned party cadre, were simply not possible.
The great weapon of this uprising has been the Internet and the electronic media more generally. Much has happened because of the immediacy with which visual images of the latest events can circulate around the world through 24*7 news channels, YouTube, Al Jazeera and even cellphones. These powerful weapons for mobilisation of unarmed, angry masses. But it is also the case that their enemies have real weapons. Will this confrontation between revolt and repression get resolved in favour of the rebellious multitude and lead to fundamental change in the system? That is rather hard to imagine.

GLORIOUS YEAR Of INDIAN CRICKET

Cricket World Cup 1983
If Pakistani fans would love to go through the section of Cricket World Cup 1992, Indian fans would love to read about this section. This is the section that talks about Cricket World Cup 1983. Cricket World Cup 1983 was held in England. India emerged as the new world champions, after West Indies by winning Cricket World Cup 1983 final against the mighty West Indies in the final at Lords on June 25 1983. 1983 Cricket World Cup final witnessed the fall of West Indies, thanks to an all round performance by the spirited Indian side.
1983 Cricket World Cup final was a low score game, as India were tumbled for a petty 183, thanks to some excellent bowling by pace quadrant of Joel Garner, Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding and Andy Roberts. Srikkanth was the highest scorer for India with a score of 38 runs. He eventually remained the highest scorer in Cricket World Cup 1983 final, as no West Indian batsmen was able to score more than 33 (scored by Vivian Richards). Many remembered that memorable catch by the Indian Captain Kapil Dev in the 1983 Cricket World Cup final that dismissed Richards. Kapil ran for about 40 meters to his back and took the catch with precision. West Indies could have easily won Cricket World Cup 1983 final on any other given day, but June 25 1983 was meant for India.
Indian team was charged up for Cricket World Cup 1983 final, as they couldn’t afford to lose after going that close. As the last West Indian wicket fell in the 1983 Cricket World Cup final, Indian fans present in the ground got crazy and came in the ground to touch their heroes. 1983 Cricket World Cup final was a memorable final. Indian victory in Cricket World Cup 1983 final also marked the rise of a team which was considered a weak side.
